学生们都知道托福听力关键是词汇的储备，那么哪些学科词汇需要提前准备呢，对于无法准备的学科术语应该如何应对呢？
首先，对于一些基本的学科术语同学们在备考的过程中应该积极进行准备，因为这类常见的专业术语，如果提前准备可以大大降低讲座的难度，并且帮助我们更好地确认讲座的正确答案。
以TPO4Lecture 4为例：
在该篇讲座的六道题目中就有两道题目涉及定义，首先我们来看看第二题，第二题列举了一系列例子让我们去判断哪些例子属于displacement activity。

想要做对这道题目不仅仅是听懂例子就可以，因为题目选项的例子和原文描述有细微的差别，原文对于例子的描述是a bird that’s in the middle of a mating ritual, and suddenly it stops and preens, you know, takes a few moments to straighten its feathers, and then returns to the mating ritual.而表格中的第二条是An animal falls asleep in the middle of a mating ritual.原文和选项的差别在于falls asleep和preens, 选项是睡着了，而从原文的描述，信号词you know告诉我们preens之后的句子takes a few moments to straighten its feathers是对该词的解释，即梳理羽毛的意思，所以想要做对该题，不仅仅需要听懂displacement activity在原文的定义This kind of behavior, this doing something that seems completely out of place, is what we call a ‘Displacement Activity’. Displacement activities are activities that animal’s engaging in when they have conflicting drives, 还需要听懂后面文章中对于Comfort Behavior的定义，即these displacement activities can include feeding, drinking, grooming, even sleeping. These are what we call ‘Comfort Behavior’.两者融会贯通必然能得出正确答案。首先displacement activity必须是当遇到冲突力时呈现出的第三种不合时宜的行为，另外displacement activity可以是包括吃、喝、梳理羽毛、睡觉等行为在内的Comfort Behavior。
理解了以上信息我们不难得出正确答案是表格中的第二条An animal falls asleep in the middle of a mating ritual, 和第三条An animal eats some food when confronted by it enemy.
除了这道题，TPO也不乏其他在讲座中直接考察定义的题目，如TPO17 Lecture 4的第4题考察papillae的功能，TPO23 Lecture 3的第3题和第4题分别考察dolphin's melon和dolphin's jaw的功能，在此我们就不一一举例了。那么我们如何去练习提高攻克学科术语的能力呢？
首先，当我们在讲座中听到一个新的学科名词的时候一定要特别敏感，迅速记录这个术语的大致发音，可以采用辅音框架，如papillae我们可以记录为PPL, 只要在做题时能够将笔记和题目联系起来即可。
其次，在平时练习时注意积累一些表示下定义的信号词，除了重读学科术语和在提出术语后暂停之外，还有以下的一些表达可以表示下定义，如：
常见信号词：
What is…?
What I mean by…is….
What I mean is…
All that means is…
…, which is / that is…
…is…In other words…
…is referred to as…
…is named/known/called…
考生们应将这些信号词记住并在平时的练习中反复练习提高敏感度。
再次，对于一些信号词不明显的定义解释，尤其是先解释再说出定义的文章，要在平时练习中多多积累经验，这些术语虽然没有在题目中直接考察，却会很大程度上影响我们对文章的理解。如TPO15 Lecture 4原文中的术语parchment是通过定语从句来引出的And the material typically used for the pages was parchment, which is animal skin that stretched and dried under tension, so it becomes really flat and can be written on. 而另一个术语palimpsest是先解释定义再引出术语They simply erased the ink off the parchment and wrote something new in its place A manual script page that was written on, erased and then used again is called a palimpsest. 因为这两类术语解释都属于较难的类型，由于对定义理解不清，同学们普遍会认为这篇讲座较难，而对于一些精听能力较弱的同学甚至听完全文都不知道文章主旨在讲什么，大大影响了做题的正确率。
