Game，再常见不过的单词，但是有多少同学知道，它还有“技巧、本领、能力”的意思呢？短语“to raise your game”、“to up your game” 都有improve的意思，在使用的时候，我们常在game前面加上需要提供的那个本领。

如：

I never finish novels. I need to up my readinggame.

I badly need to work on my interview gamebefore my big interview next week.

You could do with a bit more exercise,mate. You should raise your running game!

 

Have a go


to have a go有一个常用的意思“尝试做某事”，大家应该都不陌生，

如例句：I’m going to have a go at cooking aThai curry from scratch.

Have a go还有什么意思呢？

to have a go后面加上 atsomeone，有“指责、批评、数落某人”的意思= criticise someone，这是一个口语中常用的表达。

如例句：

The boss really had a go at Michaela aftershe offended our clients.

Susie had a go at her husband last night.He’d forgotten all about her birthday.

Why do you always have a go at me? Whycan’t you say something nice?

同学们在看到这个短语时，可能想到的是“完成”或者“做完某事”，如果你认为是这个意思，那就要引起不适了。这个表达实际是用来感叹一件事情特别枯燥，让人厌倦，再也不想干了。

例句：

I need a new job. I’m so done withdelivering pizza.

I need to get to bed earlier. I’m so donewith feeling like a zombie every day.

I’m so done with learning Hungarian. Thegrammar is so hard!

A thing 大家都知道有“一件东西，一件物品”等意思，除此之外，它还表示“潮流、时尚”。

如例句：

Using funny GIFs in your message is such a thing.

You know parkour: the sport of running andjumping across buildings? Why is that such a thing?

Organic powdered food. Since when has thatbeen a thing?

 

Not half


很简单的两个单词组合，但却不是字面上的意思，而是表示“非常、特别、很”，用来加强肯定语气，不要看到not就想到否定哦~

例句：

A: That party was awesome!
B: Not half, mate. The music was incredible.

A: ‘Not half’ is a useful phrase, huh?
B: Not half.
